What is an electronic or e-ticket for Italian trains?
An electronic ticket (e-ticket) is a digital reservation confirmation sent instantly via email, containing a PNR (Passenger Name Record) code that allows you to travel without a physical paper ticket. On high-speed trains like Frecciarossa, it serves as your boarding pass with an assigned seat; on Regional trains, it functions as a Digital Regional Ticket that is automatically validated at your scheduled departure time.
The e-ticket is the standard method for booking train travel in Italy through ItaliaRail and Trenitalia. Upon completing your booking, you receive an email confirmation containing your PNR code. This code is your proof of purchase and permission to travel. The rules for using your e-ticket depend on the type of train you are booking.
Update: Digital Regional Ticket Validation
As of September 2024, Digital Regional Tickets are validated automatically at the train's scheduled departure time. You no longer need to perform a manual check-in. However, if you need to change your travel time, you must do so before the scheduled departure time. Once the train departs (and the ticket is auto-validated), no further changes can be made.
E-Ticket Rules by Train Type

Key Benefits of E-Tickets
- Instant Delivery: Receive your PNR confirmation immediately via email.
- Ticketless Travel: No need to print physical tickets for high-speed trains; simply show the code on your smartphone.
- Security: PNR codes are stored digitally, reducing the risk of lost paper tickets.
- Flexibility: Digital regional tickets allow for online schedule changes prior to departure.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I don't receive my email?
Check your spam folder. If you still cannot find it, you can retrieve your booking using your PNR on the Manage Orders page.
Do I need to print my e-ticket?
For most trains, printing is optional. Conductors can scan the PNR or QR code directly from your mobile device. However, keeping a printed backup is recommended in case your device battery dies.
What about Rail Passes?
Travelers using a Eurail Pass or Interrail Pass usually travel with a mobile pass on an app, which functions similarly to an e-ticket but requires manual activation of travel days.
