You may be able to find less expensive trains, but they are not the high speed trains, and can take 4-5 hours or more and also may require a train transfer. Even though some of these trains are less expensive, the AV trains will save you a lot of time and generally are not much more expensive.
Italo trains travel from Florence's Santa Maria Novella train station to Turin's Porta Susa station, but only make the trip 5 times per day. That trip takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Torino Porta Nuova is Turin's main station, and third only to Roma Termini and Milano Centrale in terms of overall passenger traffic. There are several bus and tram lines that stop outside the station to make it easier to get around the city, and there's also a Metro (subway) station underneath the train station itself.
Torino Porta Susa is Turin's secondary station and where you'll find most of the trains to and from Milan. There are bus lines that stop at the station as well.
